「あれは読みましたか？」

本。マンガ。映画やゲーム。

いろいろなものについて、「そう言えば、あれ読んだ？」という話題が出ることがある。この質問は、一見無難で当たり障りがない様に思うが、実はけっこう危険である。ついうっかり、自分が相手に対して抱いている印象を暴露してしまう場合があるからだ。

例えば、「『ふたりはプリキュア』ってどうですか？」という質問。これは二人の中学生女子が変身して悪と戦う人気のアニメ作品なので、小さい子供や、既にお子さんをお持ちの方に対しては、さほど問題ではない。だが、これを三十代の独身男性に尋ねてしまったら、その裏側に「オタクっぽいから知ってそう」という偏見が見え隠れしてしまう。同様に、あまり男性に縁のなさそうな女性に対して、「『ブリジット・ジョーンズの日記』好きそうですよね」などと尋ねるのもよろしくない（のみならず、「杉田かおるってどう思います？」とかいった負け犬を匂わせる発言も鬼門である）。そんなつもりはなくとも、相手に「そういうイメージ」を抱いていると連想される危険がある。

やはりこういった質問で最も無難なのは、名前ぐらいは誰もが聴いたことがあるビッグタイトルを持ち出すことだと思う。映画ならば『スター・ウォーズ』、ゲームは『ファイナル・ファンタジー』、ドラマの新しい所では『冬のソナタ』なんかも、まあかろうじて許容範囲になる。有名だから、今流行っているから思い付いただけで、特にあなたの印象とは関係ないんですよとはっきり伝えることが大切だ。

こんな事を考えたのも、この一ヶ月以内に三人の違う人物から「『デスノート』って読んでます？」と聞かれたからだ。確かに読んでるし、ジャンプに連載中の人気マンガだし、一人二人なら分かるが三人というのは存外多い。それにひきかえ、「『ハチミツとクローバー』読んでます？」と聞かれたことは一度もない。これもまた、周囲に与える印象のなせる業なのかもしれない。

「デスノートが好きそう」なイメージと、「ハチミツとクローバーが好きそう」なイメージ。

どちらであっても一向に構わないが、「『最強伝説黒沢』が好きそう」と思われるのだけは避けたい、そんなお年頃である。
